The ISO IDMP standards aim to harmonize the global identification of medicinal products, but their paper-based nature introduces ambiguity and inconsistent implementations. To address this, Boehringer Ingelheim, in collaboration with the Pistoia Alliance and leading pharma companies, co-developed the IDMP Ontology (IDMP-O), a vendor-agnostic, machine-readable semantic model ensuring clarity and interoperability. Building on this foundation, we have implemented advanced capabilities that enable cross-authority data comparison, semantic question answering across regulatory and supply chain domains, and accelerated compliance processes. These innovations earned us the TOPRA Award in the Innovation category. Looking forward, we envision to extend IDMP-O by linking it with clinical ontologies to create a unified semantic layer across the medicine lifecycle. This will unlock AI-driven insights and empowering business users to “talk to their data.” This talk will share our journey, lessons learned, and practical strategies for adopting semantic technologies in complex pharmaceutical environments.
